General elections were held in Kenya on 8 August 2017 to elect the President, members of Parliament and devolved governments. The reported results indicated that incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta was re-elected with 54% of the vote. His main opponent, Raila Odinga, refused to accept the results and contested them in the Supreme Court, alleged that the results had been tampered with by hackers. Following the election, there were protests in Kisumu, Kibera and Mathare, biggest slums in Nairobi, where Odinga enjoys major political support, some of which turned violent and deadly. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International found that just during the August poll, police killed at least 33 people, possibly as many as 50, and injured hundreds more in some parts of Nairobi alone.
