- I am intrigued by observing the collusion of nature & man as it accidentally creates art.
I hunt for this art in the wild. They are not imaginary images, they are real;
visual landscapes that would probably be overlooked or would be deemed ugly:
erosion, collision, rust, and rot. Yet, when presented without identification
they can be beautiful, seductive, and emotionally evocative.
These compositions evolve over a period of years.
They seem concrete, permanent, but they are transitory: freight cars & dumpsters move,
get repainted and retagged with graffiti, abandoned trucks and automobiles
are crushed or in some cases restored.
The high prices of scrap metals in recent years has resulted
in most of the seasoned salvage yards being obliterated.
Often I am only days, if not hours, ahead of the crusher.
These pieces of incidental art vanish.
I capture them at the moment of their existence before they disappear.
In keeping with the concept of Wabi-sabi my images are transient & imperfect,
adhering to the Buddhist teaching of the three marks of existence:
Impermanence, suffering, & absence of self-nature,
..... and appreciative of the integrity of natural processes.
Random events throughout our lives shape our vision. Abstract images can connect
with this past, both consciously & subconsciously. The subjects of my images
are not exposed by the titles in order to elicit an undistracted reaction based upon
the viewer's own personal experience.
