Summary
“It can no longer be shouldered”: Municipalities are fighting against further admission of refugees
Assignment for NEUE ZUERCHER ZEITUNG in December 2022

German cities and municipalities are legally responsible for housing migrants. But there is no more accommodation, and daycare centres and schools are also at their limit. Many district administrators are therefore imposing a freeze on admissions. Federal politicians have ignored the warning signals for too long.

Together with NZZ reporter Susann Kreutzmann, I traveled to an initial reception center for refugees in Brandenburg, Germany, where we spoke to some of the residents.
