Xana DuMe, the Tap-Dancing Cabaret Drag Diva
Xana DuMe, the Tap-Dancing Cabaret Drag Diva
I’ve been taking adult level tap dance lessons for fun and exercise. One of my favorite teachers is Felipe Galganni, whose classes are challenging and fun and whose musical choices are inspiring.
Now a US citizen, Felipe hails from São Paulo, Brazil. He lives in NYC with his partner Rob. Felipe appears in clubs and concert venues as Xana DuMe, the Brazilian Tap-Dancing Drag Diva. Xana is a consummate performer: funny, poignant, beautiful, and she dances, too! She does regular shows in NYC and elsewhere and has received the honor of “Best Drag Artist” in the 2024 Broadway World Cabaret Awards.
Following the presidential inauguration in January 2025, I was appalled by the hostilities toward the LGBTQIA community, fueled by the administration and supported by many Americans. I endeavored to create a narrative portrait of Felipe as he transforms to Xana DuMe. Over a period from winter through spring, I photographed Felipe in the dance studio, at home choosing costumes and applying cosmetics, and performing at a cabaret.
With full cooperation and participation, Felipe allows me to photograph intimate moments, as he is focused intently on whatever he’s doing. In his own words, “It’s super important for me to support my LGBTQIA community, and I don’t think I can do that when I’m tap dancing out of drag, where I can’t fully express myself.”
In this fraught political and social climate, I feel the need to tell his story and celebrate his artistry.
