Shirin Abedi is documentary photographer working on themes such as emancipation, shame and love. Shirin is also a researcher, translator & teacher. Grown up in Hannover, she now lives in Germany and Iran. Shirin Abedi received the Inge Morath Award from Magnum Foundation in 2023. Shirin is a member of Women Photograph, Diversify Photo, Laif Cooperation, VG Bild Kunst, and in 2022-2024 Jury of the German Youth Photo Prize. Shirin is a Stiftung Kunstfonds, Journalism Fund and VG Bild Kunst Grantee, and her work has been exhibited internationally in Germany, France, Finland, Estland and Bangladesh She worked on assignment for Zeit Online and The Globe and Mail, and her personal work has been published in De Volkskrant, Stern Magazine, Brandeins and Krautreporter. Shirin is keen about improving the photojournalism industry, she wants to make it a healthier environment. She is critical about power imbalances, common narratives, and representation. Her recent achievements are a workshop about diversity in photographic representation with Cameo Kollektiv, and the participation at the “Curating through Conflict with Care” symposium in Berlin. Shirin Abedi holds a bachelors degree in “Photojournalism and Documentary Photography” from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Hannover.
