Shirin Abedi was born in Tehran in 1996 and emigrated to Germany at the age of seven. Since then, she has lived in parallel in two cultures. Her interest in photojournalism grew during her early adolescence and after taking her first photography course in 2011, her dream of becoming a storyteller got more and more realistic.
Immediately after graduating from high school in the summer of 2014, she began her studies in photojournalism and documentary photography at Hannover University of Applied Sciences and Arts, which she successfully completed in 2021. Furthermore, she spent a semester abroad at DMJX in Aarhus in 2019.
In 2016, she moved to Tehran for a year to better understand her country of origin. There, she photographed stories for BORNA News Agency, among others. Since 2018, Shirin Abedi has been working as a freelance photojournalist. Shirin is mainly interested in topics such as emancipation, identity and so-called everyday heroines* and their struggles. She is a member of the Fotobus Society, Diversify Photo, Women Photograph and the German Journalist Union. Since 2022 she is member and spokeswoman of the jury of the German Youth Photography Award.
