Yazmín is a 35-year-old mother of four who works at a plastics recycling factory in the Iztapalapa district, east of Mexico City. On May 21, 2021, she was attacked with acid while on her way home from work. Since then, she has faced the ravages of acid violence, including surgical interventions, legal proceedings, and workplace discrimination that have completely changed her routine, her body, and her life.
Her children have been an important pillar in her recovery. They have helped her remain steadfast throughout the legal process. Today, Yazmín is afraid of walking down the street and being attacked again, as so far no one has been arrested for the attack. Despite everything, she tries to remind herself of her strength every day.
There are currently no official records of acid violence in Mexico. The Carmen Sánchez Foundation, the first in the country to support women survivors of these types of crimes, has recorded at least 34 attacks in the last two decades, of which 28 women have survived.
