Summary
Thousands of people took to the streets of Santiago, Chile, during the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet against President Salvador Allende, in Santiago, Chile, on September 10, 2023.
That was the message of thousands of women who gathered in front of the Palacio de la Moneda, in Santiago, on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the military coup in Chile.
Dressed in black, with lit candles and in silence, a crowd of women walked to the scene of the dramatic and violent events that culminated in the overthrow and death of President Salvador Allende.
There were slogans of “assault on democracy” and other complaints against the oppression that occurred during the years of military dictatorship that followed.
The vigil was called by 50 civil society and human rights organizations, which was attended, among others, by the Minister of Cultures, Arts and Heritage, Carolina Arredondo.
“It was an opportunity to meet, embrace and strengthen each other tirelessly than ever before,” said the minister.
