Cimarrona
ongoing project
The term Cimarrona refers to the wild female spirit, which holds an African essence and expresses it in all forms of resistance against slavery and discrimination. This ongoing project explores the ways of representation of women and Afro spirituality in Ecuador. Black women become visible as historical protagonists of liberation and as guardians of ancestral afro practices as a method of cultural memory preservation and cultural resistance of the diaspora in the Ecuadorian territory.
The goal of this essay is to explore black women’s cimarron knowledge and to reconfigure the collective imaginary of black identity beyond the superficiality of skin color and from its deeper creative and liberating significance.
