Summary
14,000 Miles explores the experience of a deployment on a family through diptychs.

14,000 Miles

In the winter of 2019-2020, my husband deployed to Afghanistan. My daughters couldn’t understand quite what this meant or how to make sense of it but they tried. They weren’t sure what “war” looks like, they weren’t sure what exactly he would be doing in this war – was he fighting people? they wondered, and they missed his presence throughout holidays, birthdays and family milestones. At one point, my oldest began researching Afghanistan while at school. ‘Mom! Guess how far Afghanistan is? 14,000 miles!” Some days, it probably feels the way. At some point, the number really doesn’t make a difference.
