I am an interdisciplinary visual editor and art director with 10 years of experience leveraging photography, illustration, animation, collage, audio, and video to bring important stories to wider audiences online. Currently, I do that as visuals editor for ProPublica, a nonprofit digital-first investigative newsroom. I thrive in results-driven collaborative environments with enthusiasm for innovation and the iterative process.
As co-founder of Diversify Photo, I am also passionately committed to improving equity and access in visual media by creating hiring resources for editors, as well as community building, professional development, and funding opportunities for our global network of nonwestern and BIPOC photographers and visual producers. Since 2017, our team has grown to 6 and our community to over 1,000. Our flagship database continues to be used by editors at most major media companies and we have raised nearly $100,000 through direct donations and corporate sponsorships. We have also secured and maintained multi year partnerships with Fujifilm, the Pulitzer Center, Photoville, Getty Images, and more, to enable our efforts to yield tangible results. Most importantly, almost every day we hear from our members who have seen direct impact on their lives and careers because of the resources we have built.
Before joining ProPublica, I was a contract photo editor on the history & culture desk at National Geographic and also worked with Newsweek, BuzzFeed News, The Intercept, and Open Society Foundations, among others. I have spoken and coached workshops at Syracuse University, The University of Oregon, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, and Western Kentucky University. I have juried competitions for the Overseas Press Club, Getty Images, The Connecticut Art Directors Club, American Illustration - American Photography, and the Society of Professional Journalists. My work has been recognized by the National Press Photographers Association, Society for News Design, American Photography, American Illustration, The Telly Awards, College Photographer of the Year, and The Student Academy Awards.
I earned my M.S. in Photography from Syracuse University and my B.A. in Studio Arts from Trinity College. I am an alum of the highly selective Eddie Adams Photography Workshop, The Kalish Visual Editing Workshop, Western Kentucky University’s Multimedia Mountain Workshop, and I completed a visual design course with General Assembly.
