Aníbal Martel Peña was born in 1978 in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. He works as a documentary photographer and videographer. While currently based in Williamsburg, Virginia, USA, he is available for assignments across the globe. Since 2011, Martel Peña has served as a correspondent for international press agencies in the United States and is a member of the NPPA (National Press Photographers Association).

His professional focus is on long-term documentary projects, photojournalism, and journalistic videos. This passion covers a wide range of subjects, including politics, travel, fine art, landscape, the environment, current news, portraiture, and arts & culture. His journey into this field began with studies in photography at Escuela de Arte y Superior de Diseño Gran Canaria, followed by photojournalism and creative photography at Escuela Superior de Comunicación, Imagen y Sonido in Madrid. He also commenced his journalism degree at Complutense University in Madrid, which is where he embarked on his path as an independent documentary and editorial photographer in 2003.

Martel Peña has had his work exhibited in respected venues such as the Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C., the Angel Orensanz Foundation in New York City, the Columbus Museum (Casa de Colón) in Gran Canaria, the Embassy of Spain in Washington D.C., and Louisiana State Museums. A particularly encouraging moment in his career was being selected for "Discoveries PHE" at the PHotoESPAÑA International Photography and Visual Arts Festival in 2017.

One project that holds special significance for him is "CISLANDERUS," a documentary video-photo essay he created with writer Thenesoya V. Martín De la Nuez, which delves into Canarian immigration to Louisiana. This project has been featured as a solo exhibition in Louisiana, at the Capitol Park Museum and The Cabildo of New Orleans, and also at the Spanish Embassy in Washington D.C.

Over the years, Aníbal Martel Peña has collaborated with a diverse range of clients, including The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, New York Magazine, Forbes Magazine, Getty Images, and Harvard University's David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, among many others. He values these collaborations and the stories they have allowed him to tell.
