Alex Ramadan, B.A. (International Development), Dip Journalism (Photojournalism); Director, 157 Photography.
Mr. Ramadan is a professional photographer with over 10 years-experience as a photo-documentarist / photo-journalist. He is the Director of 157 Photography. Mr. Ramadan has undertaken previous photo-documentary work, and he is experienced in working with community members, including older adults, and researchers, and exploring complex, intersecting social phenomena through the creation of visual stories and narratives. His previous work includes the Lost Boys series, where he visually documented the lives of young men in Toronto over a three-year period as they navigated the gay party scene. This work focused on highlighting the rich subculture where youth, sexual identity, individuality, and group acceptance intersected. He has also been involved in documenting the rising middle-class in Egypt amid sweeping social and political changes over the last 10 years. Mr. Ramadan has worked collaboratively with researchers, community members, and historians on a previous project where he developed the visual component of a history project created in collaboration with members of the Stop Community Food Center’s Global Roots multicultural community garden at Artscape Wychwood Barnes. Importantly, Mr. Ramadan has worked with the STILL LIFE research team on the previous two STILL LIFE projects – STILL LIFE: Changing Lenses and STILL LIFE: Aging in Place. During these projects he ran photographic workshops for older adults and student trainees in a photovoice project, contributed to data collection (visual) and analysis, and led the development of an aesthetic / visual identity for the project. He has contributed significantly to the intellectual development of the STILL LIFE program.
