María is an independent documentary photographer, photojournalist and visual storyteller working on stories and projects related to social, political and environmental issues in Brazil and Latin America. She studied international relations and geography as an undergraduate at the University of Texas and public policy as a masters student and researcher at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, where she focused on environmental policy in the Amazon. She has lived and worked in the United States, Paraguay and Brazil, where she has been based for six years.

She works on stories that look at human responses to social and environmental issues of our time through an ethical and empathetic lens, contemplating our relationship with memory and nature. Maria is a National Geographic Society and International Women's Media Foundation grantee, member of Farpa, Women Photograph, Diversify Photo and The Everyday Projects. Maria has received support from the National Geographic Society Emergency Fund for Journalists and International Women's Media Foundation Howard G. Buffet Fund for Women Journalists to further develop her work. She is a regular contributor to The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg, among other news outlets, and is available for assignments.
