Summary
After the pandemic, a million Chinese people left China for new investment opportunities in unexpected locations. This migration was driven by economic challenges and dissatisfaction with Xi Jinping's leadership. I explored and photographed the changing dynamics of Pracharat Bamphen Road, known as the second Chinatown in Bangkok, where Thai-owned stores have been replaced by Chinese businesses.
After the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 1.1 million Chinese people left China, searching for prosperity in non-traditional destinations for Chinese investment. These destinations ranged from a coastal city in Japan and rural Vietnam to a street in Bangkok. This influx was motivated by an economic downturn and disillusionment with Xi Jinping’s increasingly coercive rule.

This story delves into the surge of Chinese migration and its impact on local communities globally - with some communities welcoming this change and others not.

For this Bloomberg Businessweek story, I captured how Pracharat Bamphen Road, known today as the second Chinatown in Bangkok, has transformed. Once filled with Thai-owned stores, this downtown area brims with signs in Mandarin advertising everything from mala hotpot to Chinese language school.
