It's been a long road for this story "“ I'm glad to finally be able to share our multimedia package on heroin addiction in Tanzania, published by AlJazeera America and AJ+. The story follows Stamil Hamadi, a sweet Dar es Salaam woman, and her friends: the unlikely victims of a drug trafficking route that goes from Afghanistan and Pakistan to Europe. The worst quality heroin stays behind in Dar's port, trickling to some of the poorest neighborhoods. Despite the fact that few governments and aid organizations work with drug addicts in Africa, because there are "sexier" things to fund, Tanzania has started methadone clinics and supports outreach programs to address their growing public health problem. Words by Sarika Bansal, photos by Erin Byrnes and myself and documentary by myself with music by Tomas Peire Serrate and Carles Delgado, additional shots by Erin Byrnes and translation by Sam Awami. Thanks to the great AlJazeera team and to The International Reporting Project for the support. Watch, read, share.
