The photographer Katriela Bat Israel from the African Hebrew Israelite Nation of Jerusalem presents in the exhibition "Malchuta" staged photographs of past figures wearing a colorful wardrobe, rich in texture and full of imaginative symbols.
In Bat Israel's work, the influence of African traditions is evident. She says that as a child we surveyed her from the ancient royal robes of African Royalty such as
Nefertiti from Egypt and Nazinga from Angola and that in her work she seeks to explore not only the materials and designs, jewelry and gems, but also the stories behind the designs, fabrics, and colors.
Katriela Bat Israel's work is influenced by the paintings of Edward Charlemont, an 18th - century Viennese portrait painter, and the American photographer Matthew Jordan Smith, who photographs contemporary beauty and fashion. She applies Charlemont's concept of painting and Smith's concept of photography in which she builds a bridge between the imaginary past and the present; Between the royal gold garments of African culture and its community members who take a creative part in its project from dyeing the fabrics, through designing and sewing the clothes, to weaving braids and collecting accessories like tiaras, jewelry hats, and antique musical instruments.
The subjects of Bat Israel's photography are the brothers and sisters from the Hebrew community of Dimona. In the photographs, she presents them in colorful and meticulous portraits that blend in with her extraordinary artistic royal visions.
