NI REI NI POR
On October 14, 2019, nine leaders of the Catalan separatist movement were jailed for sedition and misuse of public funds for their role in a failed 2017 declaration of independence. Catalonia's drive for independence plunged Spain into a big political crisis. The region had its autonomy suspended for almost seven months after the referendum declared illegal by Spain's Constitutional Court (about 90% of Catalan voters backed independence and Republic while turnout was only 43%). Mass protests still going on throughout the region with rallies, roadblocks and a general strike. Protesters took to the streets and met with thousands of heavily armed members of special units police sent from Madrid. In confrontations with the police that occurred between October and December 2019, there were produced multiple arrests and hundreds injured. People, driven by "youths" started to challenge police and the State as a direct consequence of the route chosen by Spain to solve the problem: police and legal weapons used in a warlike context. With his photo reportage, Gian Marco Benedetto illuminates the acts carried out in Barcelona as well as the questionable methods of police and of young activists who choose to define themself "14-o generation".
