Migrant Caravan, May 2018
A group of over 150 Central American and Mexican migrants camped in tents and under tarps at the El Chaparral port of entry in Tijuana, Mexico, on May 1, 2018. Many of the migrants were children. Although organizations and people have provided food, blankets, clothing, and even toys for the kids, the plight of the asylum seekers remains uncertain. At this point, some of the migrants have entered into U.S. customs for processing, but most are at shelters in the city or have returned to their countries. I spent the afternoon and evening speaking to about 15 of the migrants to hear their stories and gain some perspective about their dreams and what they hope to accomplish. Unfortunately, the current political rhetoric concerning immigration, the border wall, and even asylum seekers is becoming more negative each day. A good way to support these immigrants is to donate to the Border Angels, an organization that gives support to human rights issues on the U.S.-Mexico border. As of Friday, May 4, most of the group of migrants had passed through to U.S. customs, and the tents were cleared out.
