Carlos Bernate

Carlos Bernate is a Colombian-born photographer, videographer, communications strategist, and writer whose work explores themes of identity, social equity, and community resilience. Originally from Bucaramanga and a graduate of Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano in Bogotá with a degree in Photography & Film, Carlos has spent over a decade telling nuanced, multimedia stories that center underrepresented voices and amplify grassroots movements. Their photography and video work have been published and featured internationally in outlets including The New York Times, The Atlantic, and Politico, among others. 

Carlos’s work has been recognized with numerous accolades, including back-to-back selections in American Photography (AI-AP) in 2021 and 2022, and multiple awards from the Virginia Press Association. In addition to their visual storytelling, Carlos leads strategic communications for nonprofit organizations, crafting impactful campaigns and content that drive advocacy around racial justice, immigration, reproductive health, and economic equity. They currently serve as the Communications Coordinator for the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy, where they merge their creative and strategic skills to support faith-based and policy-driven efforts for systemic change. 

Since 2017, Carlos has been based in Richmond, Virginia, where they continue to document the lives, struggles, and strength of their local community — always with a commitment to authenticity, dignity, and justice. Their work has been exhibited in the United States, Colombia, Argentina, and Portugal.
