In 2019, the Hong Kong government introduced a controversial bill to the public society, allowing the extradition of fugitives to mainland China and prosecuting people for political reasons under China’s opaque legal system. Therefore triggering one of the most important and violent pro-democracy anti-government protests, from the beginning as one of the biggest peaceful mass marches in history into the city’s biggest political crisis, as citizens stood up and demanded a systematic change or the Independence of Hong Kong.

Following the protest eventually cooled down in 2020, authorities started a brutal and intensifying crackdown on the city, introducing the Hong Kong National Security Law, shutting down independent media, arresting opposition leaders, silencing dissent among the society, citing fears to the citizens, further bringing the once semi-autonomous city into turmoil.
Since the launch of the BNO visa scheme, over 144,000 Hongkongers have moved to the United Kingdom, and others decided to move across the globe, including Canada, Taiwan and Europe.
