Laurel Chor is a freelance journalist, photographer, and filmmaker based in Hong Kong. A National Geographic Explorer, she has reported from more than 20 countries around the world. In the past, she has worked for the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, the Guardian, the Independent, the Telegraph, NPR, AFP, EPA, Getty, Reuters and more.

She is currently working on a long-term project about traditional Chinese medicine, its impact on the environment, and its cultural significance.

She was previously a producer for the Emmy award-winning nightly news show VICE News Tonight on HBO, covering stories all over Asia as the only staff member in the region, including the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar, the quake-tsunami in Palu, Indonesia, and the bloody drug war in Bangladesh. The documentary she produced about a Chinese migrant worker couple going home for the lunar new year – partaking in the world’s largest human migration – won the Overseas Press Club David A. Andelman and Pamela Title award for “best international reporting in the broadcast media showing a concern for the human condition”.

Laurel played for the Hong Kong national fifteens rugby team for several years and was a member of the first Hong Kong team to play in the Rugby World Cup in 2017. She graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown University with a BS in International Health and a certificate in International Development.
