My thinking then and still is that my presence (I could have filed for my Photo Agency but this would be purely speculative coverage) would just hinder the emergency operation that was in full swing to help the people of the region. I wasn't commissioned to go there as part of a Newspaper or Magazine‘s coverage which would of made it ‚my job‘ to be there.
However, as I was still monitoring the story unfolding I came across an interesting feature on the cleaning up operation going on in Rhineland-Palatinate. I put this up to The Daily Telegraph (UK) and gained a 2 day commission from which I‘ve just returned today. I‘ll add the images from the Feature after they are first published in the Newspaper this weekend.
One thing that particularly struck me about being in these flood devastated regions is how a major European economic power such as Germany-a first world country so to speak- can, in the affected villages and towns, crash in a matter of hours into 3rd world conditions.
When the environment decides to bite back against man made global warming then there is practically nothing we can do to stop it. All infrastructure collapses so quickly. Big decisions have to be made to halt what seems at present to be an inevitable slide into the void!
