About
I've been an author, documentary photographer, playwright, editor, & father/father-in-law many years. My publishing & exhibition credits are many, and I've been nominated for topmost awards in my field. Two awards the group I lead and I have won are the Sept. 12th Guild's top book award in 2002 for 'Spirit of America, Vol. 1' (2001--notable historian David McCullough called SA1 a "sumptuous treasure trove" he said he very much appreciated having in his library), and the Wis. Governor's Commendation Award (from Gov. James Doyle) for 'Spirit of the World' (2006). Both group books are word-photo anthologies I directed-edited. I've been published in hundreds of top venues, including Smithsonian mag, NYTimes, RPS Journal, British Journal of Photography, London Sunday Times, Business Korea, Korean Culture, KoreAm Journal, Columbia Missourian, & Missouri Life -- written & photo contributions. I've authored 124 books & 15 plays so far, incl. 39 volumes in my 'Spirit of America' book-series, & my Pulitzer-nominated play 'Remembering Davy Crockett'. I live in Wisconsin; my son, Matthew, and his artist/teacher-wife, Jessica, live on the US East Coast. Matt graduates in 2017 from University in Engineering, and is an Army Special Ops (medic) veteran of the Afghanistan War. Matt has been co-author/co-photographer with me on some books, including 'Images', 'Pictures of Human Life' & 'American Eyes'. Matt typed the 100,000-word manuscript for SA1 when he was 13-years-old.
