David Butow is a photojournalist based in California, USA. Asignments have taken him to Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and South America. He is a former contract photographer with US News and World Report Magazine and is a current member of Redux Pictures. His primary interests are social issues and the effects of public policy at local and international levels. Butow also works extensively in the United States covering issues of politics, education, race, immigration and poverty among others.
From 2017-2021 he covered politics in Washington, D.C. and the work was published in the monograph "Brink" a year later, with corresponding exhibits at the University of California, Berkeley and the Rochester Institute of Technology.As a photographer working in the journalistic field, he hopes his craft contributes to an understanding of various peoples, their living conditions, cultural evolutions and the connections that exist between societies around the world. He tries to approach his coverage with as few pre-conceptions as possible, letting the personal experience of seeing and photographing a situation guide his viewpoint.
He has received awards from World Press Photo, Communication Arts, University of Missouri Pictures of the Year (POYi), NPPA Best of Photojournalism, Photo District News, the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies, The White House News Photographers Association, The American Photography Annual, The New York Association of Black Journalists and the Society of Magazine Designers.
