In July of this year I spent time at the annual Frida Kahlo Fiesta in Old Town, Albuquerque. The event was hosted and created by Sally Moon of W!ld Moon Boutique, which is also located in the Old Town patio. The fiesta began nine years ago in celebration of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, whose birthday and passing occurred in July. According to Moon, Kahlo has always been her icon, “I admired her courage and her tenaciousness and nothing actually stopped her not even her death bed."  It was this appreciation that led Moon to bring to life the fiesta. The festivities included a look alike contest, a birthday cake for Kahlo and a live band. Next year the event will celebrate its 10th anniversary. It was my intention to document the life and color of such a whimsical occasion, while also creating some portraits of the fiesta goers and attempt to capture their appreciation for the artist. It is my intention to return again next year and continue working on this series.
