Mourning in Srebrenica

In July 1995, during the Bosnian War, the Srebrenica massacre took place, considered the greatest atrocity committed in Europe since World War II. 8,000 Muslim people were killed at the hands of the Yugoslav People's Army and the so-called Bosnian Serb Army.Although the aim was supposedly the elimination of Bosnian Muslim males, the massacre included the murder of children, teens, and the elderly, with the aim of achieving the "cleansing" of the city.
On July 11, 2012, I attended the annual commemoration of the Srebrenica Genocide. The victims, who every year are identified by Bosnia's National Memory Centre, are honored in a caravan that walks the coffins through various villages in the country until they reach Srebrenica. Once there, the bodies are placed in a kind of factory hall, and remain for a day so that the relatives can say goodbye before the public tribute and the mass burial.
