Quarantined on our stoop, my daughter Lola watches her friends on bikes ride by. Yesterday she was allowed to pass a soccer ball with the other kids. Today news of friends with the virus coupled with a new tightness in my lungs prompted me to tighten the rules. Lola is not happy.
My daughter and I were in her room when we heard a flute that stopped us in our tracks. Our neighbor was playing below in an impromptu backyard concert. We opened the window and let the music flood in. Lola spent a good half hour dancing on the windowsill.
Lola and best friend Omar hug themselves to keep from hugging each other. Under ordinary circumstances the kids on our block free flow in and out of each other's apartments.
