Ania Gruca is a self-taught documentary photographer-videographer whose interests lie in the lives of underreported communities and individuals. May it be through current social issues, collection of memories, investigation of the past or new cultural trends as forms of expression, Ania’s work relentlessly raise questions of identity and belonging. Her first long-term project on Zanzibar, started in 2010, brought her to live and work extensively in the Indian Ocean region and in Africa. Aside from her personal projects, she works primarily as a photographer/videographer with international organizations, institutions and NGO such as the United Nations, the French Development Agency, Women’s Hope International, The French Institute for Research in East Africa, crafting multimedia content. She is a member of the French collective Divergence-Images. Currently, Ania is directing two documentary films about a Comorian choreographer acting for social change in the Comoros and an unusual 85 years-old writer in New York.
