Halima Abubakar is a dedicated artist and cultural practitioner whose work deeply explores the intersections of identity, heritage, and cultural preservation. Born in Northern Nigeria and raised in the Southern and Western regions, Halima's exposure to various cultural experiences shapes her unique perspective. This blend of influences fuels her passion for understanding and preserving cultural identity.

Central to Halima's practice is the "Kwalliya" project, which focuses on the traditional tattoos of Northern Nigeria. These tattoos, now endangered due to changing religious beliefs and medical practices, were once vital cultural symbols. Inspired by her grandmother’s intricate marks, Halima documents and celebrates these tattoos as powerful symbols of identity, storytelling, and ancestry.

With support from The National Geographic Society, Halima has conducted extensive research and interviews, resulting in a rich compilation of photographs, videos, and other artistic media. She envisions the next phase of "Kwalliya" using new technology to create immersive experiences, allowing audiences to dynamically interact with these cultural stories.

Halima’s practice is deeply grounded in community engagement, involving local communities in documentation and creating dialogue platforms. This approach fosters pride and ownership, encouraging individuals to embrace and express their cultural identities freely. By reexamining historical practices and promoting free expression, Halima sparks conversations that challenge dominant narratives and highlight the strength found in cultural diversity.

Believing in art’s transformative power, Halima strives to create meaningful, impactful work that bridges geographical and cultural divides. Her art educates, inspires empathy, and fosters mutual understanding, contributing to a more inclusive and compassionate world. Halima has exhibited her work locally and Internationally and has been recognized for her contributions to cultural preservation and artistic innovation. She remains dedicated to ensuring that the stories and traditions of the past stay vibrant and relevant for future generations.
