Alfafar will never be the same for Encarna Jiménez and her husband, both octogenarians, after the DANA that hit the town. The couple, who have shared their home for 54 years, now live amidst ruins and devastated memories. ‘On the day of the flood we didn't really know what was happening until the water was already coming in,’ says Encarna, her voice cracking with emotion. The force of the water ripped off the front of their house, taking with it every memory of a life together.

That night, as the water rose, her husband urged her to take refuge upstairs. ‘You go upstairs and rest, I'll stay here and keep an eye on the water,’ he told her, even though they both feared their home would not hold up. Not knowing if they would survive, they stayed awake, hoping the disaster would go no further.

‘Thank God we are both still alive,’ Encarna says, but the pain of losing her home still grips her. With tears in her eyes, she confesses that the only thing she can do is laugh, so as not to cry any more, because she has no more tears to shed,

Encarna is now in the care of her daughter, where she is well looked after, although the uncertainty persists. She does not know if the time she has left in this world will be enough to rebuild what was once her home.
