Documentary photographer and filmmaker Diego Ibarra Sánchez has been awarded the Premio Fotografía Humanista 2025 by the Encuentro Internacional de Fotoperiodismo de Asturias for his recent work on the ongoing war with Hezbollah, produced with the support of The New York Times. The honored project reflects Ibarra’s signature approach to long-form visual storytelling — rooted in empathy, depth, and a commitment to documenting the human cost of conflict. Since the November ceasefire, Israeli strikes have killed more than 300 people, including at least 98 civilians, according to the UN — a context his work renders visible with rare nuance and courage.
Based in Lebanon, Diego Ibarra Sánchez (Spain, 1982) is an award-winning documentary photographer, filmmaker, and educator whose work explores the social and psychological impact of war. A contributor to The New York Times since 2012, his stories have appeared in France 24, Revista 5W, CNN, Der Spiegel, NZZ, El País, UNHCR, and UNICEF, among others. His acclaimed photobook The Phoenician Collapse (FotoEvidence, 2022) was named Best Independent Photobook by the Lucie Foundation and curated by National Geographic’s former photo editor Sarah Leen. Ibarra Sánchez was recently named Photographer of the Year at POY Asia 2024, continuing a career distinguished by both artistic rigor and humanistic vision.
