On February 6th, a  7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey and northern Syria.  It has become one of the most devastating and deadliest natural disasters of the century.  The death toll in Syria and Turkey had surpassed 46,000.

The earthquake brought a catastrophe on a biblical scale, flattening cities and turning countless homes into piles of stone, steel, and dust. Thousands of buildings have been destroyed or rendered unstable. It has left hundreds of thousands of people in need of aid. In Syria, this calamity comes almost 12 years into one of the most brutal and intractable conflicts of the 21st century.

According to relief agencies; in Syria alone, the United Nations said that as many as 5.3 million might have lost their homes.

This photo essay has been done for the NYT OPINION on February 2023 in Hatay, Diyarbarkir,  Adiyaman, Gaziantep, Jinderis, and Bab al-Salam border crossing with Syria.
