J.Genevieve is an artist first, intuitive photographer second, raw & emerging human-woman-and-then-some always. Her soul gaze has always been drawn to the heart and true nature of things, in particular the disruptive beauty of the real of it. They are unapologetically enamored with life unfolding in the moment, layers of creative process, the textured mystique of the mundane, unfiltered emotion, dissenting bodies, wild forms & honest souls in their element. As a seer, J.Genevieve observes versus directs, instinctively merging social documentary and abstract aesthetics. This approach, which is highly intuitive and process oriented, shapes both their photographic work and ongoing exploration of other mediums. She creates best within a space of being, in between moments, behind the scenes and below the surface. Inevitably, what isn't visible will surface when they're around, which can be an affirming experience for some and a disconcerted unraveling for others. Their art practice seeks to support the necessary work of mending our spirits with our humanity and is driven by the belief that liberation from performative appearances is needed, now more than ever, within the visual conversation and beyond.
LONG BIO:
At 17, Jess (given name, represented by the J. in J.Genevieve) instinctually picked up a camera to document a moment between her father & grandfather. She hasn't strayed far from that tool since. Over the past 20+ years she taught herself everything she knows about her craft, honing her perspective through nation and world wide travels, on the floor with two children under two, asking endless questions while shooting alongside other photographers, amongst the rigors of military life and within the daily rhythms of life, business and art in small town Texas. Even when discouraged from pursuing a conventional career path within the arts (or from pursuing a career in general) photography remained a thread of hope, possibility, provision and protection as well as a means of dissent and liberation.
J.Genevieve was birthed in mid 2019. As so many did in 2020, they found themselves pivoting a brand new business and adapting as a working artist in ways she could have never seen coming. This pressure turned out to be an incubator of introspection and continued healing that she needed to fully align with her calling and purpose regarding J.Genevieve. Underneath it all, the long game for J.Genevieve is to cultivate a creative ecosystem that offers support and access and equitable space for expansion to liberate and empower individuals, particularly artists who have faced or who are facing ongoing intimate partner violence.
Currently [and always], she is proud to be an artist first, photographer second, raw and emerging human-woman-and-then-some always. She irrevocably trusts their soul gaze, which is drawn to the heart and true nature of things, in particular the disruptive beauty of the real of it; life unfolding in the moment, layers of creative process, the textured mystique of the mundane, unfiltered emotion, dissenting bodies, wild forms & honest souls in their element.
