Antietam Battlefield
This is something that happened over 150 years ago so I focused on details, like leaves in the cemetery, and corn in where a bloody battle took place in a cornfield. Scores of Union soldiers in the cemetery are still unidentified. The confederate solders are buried in Hagerstown, and I didn't make it over there, maybe another time.
I just photographed a friend's funeral at Arlington National Cemetery last Friday, and was on my way home, when I saw the sign, for the battlefield. I thought to myself, I wonder what it looks like. So, these are photos I made in a couple hours of exploring.
In just over a year, I photographed the 2016 presidential campaigns, and many, many protests during and afterwards.
As I was thinking about the divisions in America today, I began to to try to imagine what it must have been like during the Civil War. It seems the country must have been divided for a few years before battles such as this that cost thousands of American lives.
