I photographed the Antietam Civil War battle field and cemetery during a road trip on the way back from D.C. This is the site of one of the worst battles of the American civil war, and the bloodiest combat loss in a single day in American history with 22,728 killed, wounded, or missing. Over 4000 were killed within 12 hours on the first day of the battle in Sept. 1862 near the beginning of the civil war.

This is something that happened over 150 years ago so I focused on details, like leaves in the cemetery, and corn in where a bloody battle took place in a cornfield. Scores of Union soldiers in the cemetery are still unidentified. The confederate solders are buried in Hagerstown, and I didn't make it over there, maybe another time.

I just photographed a friend's funeral at Arlington National Cemetery last Friday, and was on my way home, when I saw the sign, for the battlefield. I thought to myself, I wonder what it looks like. So, these are photos I made in a couple hours of exploring.

In just over a year, I photographed the 2016 presidential campaigns, and many, many protests during and afterwards.

As I was thinking about the divisions in America today, I began to to try to imagine what it must have been like during the Civil War. It seems the country must have been divided for a few years before battles such as this that cost thousands of American lives.
