Global warming has created urgent situations on our coastlines and our coasts have become no longer merely a day at the beach—coastal retreat, undermining of coastlands, failure of fisheries, the list is daunting and lengthening. But the human drive to see and be near the ocean remains. What will remain of the coasts of our historical memory may prove to be the question of the twenty-first century as changing coastlines redefine human settlement and habitation patterns.
