John created the network’s Two Degrees project, which aims to involve CNN's audience in climate change coverage; and Change the List, which focused on social justice in bottom-of-the-list places. Both projects asked readers to vote to commission story topics and to be part of finding solutions. He spearheaded The Vanishing, a CNN International series on the extinction crisis, which was a finalist for the Livingston Award as well as an Online Journalism Award in 2017.
Previously, John won the Livingston Award for an online story and documentary on modern slavery in Mauritania and the Batten Medal for public service for a portfolio of work that included pieces on income inequality in rural Louisiana, LGBT rights in Mississippi, rape in Alaska and a kayaking trip down a really messed up river. His work also has been honored by Investigative Reporters and Editors, the Online News Association, the Foreign Press Association, the National Association of Lesbian and Gay Journalists, and others.
