In 2020, many programs for   students with special needs came to a sudden stop. The Pandemic left those with disabilities incredibly isolated, without a place where they could engage with their communities. Wellness Dance  Academy began with the intention of creating a space where adults with   disabilities could cultivate connections with their  peers, and express  their creativity.

What started  as a small meet up of four students at a local park has  now grown  into an established class of over 20 students in a  professional dance  studio space. Drawing from her background of over 13  years of special  needs education and ballroom dancing, the program  director's goal is  to not only provide a   space where students come to learn, but also  somewhere they have the  freedom to express themselves through dancing,  music and the arts. For the past two years, I have  dedicated time to getting to know each student, and forming friendships. Still ongoing, Stardust is a series of portraits that brings to light our preconceived stereotypes surrounding the word 'disabled', challenging our notion of how much adults with special needs are capable of despite their disabilities.

With a newfound sense of physical and emotional determination, this year many students braved the world of competitive ballroom dance. They took home 1st and 3rd place prizes, inspiring other students to also shoot for the stars.
