Public Project
After the Storm: An Artistic Approach
Summary
An ongoing project, artistically documenting the destruction and recovery efforts of Hurricane Helene along the Swannanoa River in Asheville NC
As a creative person, I desperately wanted to preserve this moment in time. But I wanted to find a unique way to capture what I saw, to find the beauty in the destruction. Then I drove down a recently reopened road along the river and this series was born. The first image in the series, with a pink sunset highlighting flood debris and abandoned cars - inspired me to start documenting the area with an artistic approach. Suddenly, I had a purpose. Taking these photos felt important and helped me heal from depression following the storm. I started journaling what I saw and how I felt. Destroyed businesses. Discarded clothing. Twisted vehicles. All the little bits of life scattered following a flood. This is an on-going series. I hope these images and my words will help future generations understand this historic weather event.
