Confessions
"“ A Prisoner and Ex-Offender Exhibition
10 Sep - 27 Nov 2016, soco gallery at 269 Yu Chau Street will be turned into a confessional space. It'll be an intimate place for you to read and listen to confessions, as well as a place for you to make your own confessions. The exhibition is a participatory art project that will see members of the public, prisoners, and ex-offenders speak about their regrets.
When we think about prisoners and ex-offenders, what immediately comes to mind is that they have committed crimes and are sinners. We often judge them and carry stereotypical images of them. We reduce them to their crime rather than seeing them as complex human beings like you and me. The criminal justice system does the same by focusing mainly on their alleged wrong-doing. They have to confess their sins, they have to admit their crime.
"˜Confessions' plays on this notion, but seeks to understand what's beneath the surface. At the exhibition, photos of ex-prisoners and their personal stories will be on display. They confess, but not in the traditional sense of the word. They tell their story, tell us who they really are, not what we think they are.
Prisoners and ex-prisoners are often overlooked and discriminated against. We hope through this exhibition, you may gain a better understanding of the people behind the label.
