Summary
The photo series Yeh Bali is a portrayal of contemporary Bali, Indonesia, that is sceptical of there being a singular "authentic" Bali anymore. Instead, the series showcases the kaleidoscope of realities that vie to represent the island, from religion, tourism, pan-Indonesia, globalisation, and immigration. Tying together photographs of differing subjects with a single element, water, or "yeh" – the visual placeholder for Bali.

Yeh Bali

Yeh Bali is a photographic portrayal of Bali, Indonesia that is skeptical of there being an 'authentic' Bali anymore. As tourism and exoticism commodifies the performance of tradition, monoculture of globalisation homogenises cultural expression, and decades of profit motives overriding heritage statecraft, the already nebulous idea of Balinese-ness is now harder to pin down than ever. Yeh Bali leans into to the fragmented, foggy, and faded reality of Bali today, in hopes that, rather than providing a clear singular source of authenticity, implores the viewer to witness the whole kaleidoscope of contemporary life on the island, and draw their own thread of commonality. Abandoning objective notions of identity, opting for truths that only exist in each individuals' subjective viewing.

Yeh Bali
