New Opening in Havana: Irezumi: The Art of the Japanese Traditional Tattoo

Jan 19, 2020
I have long documented shokunin (master-craftspeople) across Japan, and 4 years ago started working with a small group of artisans still practicing the manual style of tattooing known as tebori, most notably celebrated Japanese tattoo artist Horiren 1st.  In conjunction with Havana's famed La Fabrica de Arte Cubano (FAC), I will be sharing a large selection of this work opening Friday, January 17th.  This exhibition will eventually lead into the country's first tattoo convention in late February.  The photos examine not only the technical aspects of the craft and the beauty/connected nature of the Japanese traditional tattoo, but also take an intimate look at this highly taboo subculture in Japan.  Furthermore, in collaboration with New York-based Ronin Gallery, I will also present a series of diptychs examining the deep historical connection between traditional tattooing and Edo-period Japanese woodblock prints, or Ukiyo-e.  If you're in Havana in the next 2 months, please come check it out at FAC!
