The Strange Story of John Without Anything is the literal translation of the title of Ricardo Figueredo Oliva’s critical and ironic documentary on the state of the Cuban economy. The movie was produced by Cooperativa in collaboration with NEWMENStudio.
Construction worker Juan takes pride in his work. He earns 250 Cuban pesos a month, slightly less than 9 Euros. Additionally, he receives several food stamps for 7 pounds of rice, half a liter of cooking oil, 5 eggs, 11 oz. of beans and a pound of chicken each month. Plus a daily loaf of bread. Each month Juan wonders whether he’ll be able to make ends meet and how much he should eat daily to make it to the end of the month. And what to do with the 9 Euros? But Juan is an optimist; he closely follows the economic news, analyses food prices and reflects on the fight against corruption. Maybe things will change…
