As a Brooklyn based artist, Maria J Hackett uses her photography to explore individuals of various backgrounds and cultures who are often misrepresented throughout the media. With portraiture, documentary and captured movement, she sets out to capture both artists and the everyday people that surround her.

While heavily focused in both photography and dance in NYC, Maria J Hackett completed her studies in photography at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Introduced to photography in her junior year at The High School of Fashion Industries, she continued on to a series of classes through The International Center of Photography’s Community Programs. Eventually, interning, and working as a teaching assistant for a number of classes through ICP followed after. Thereafter, leading to her first position as a photography instructor of Winter 2017.

Portraiture, movement and photojournalism has become Maria's main focus in photography. With a deep transformative experience through motherhood, Maria has found her photography shifting back to documenting those of underrepresented communities as well as individuals she feels deserves a voice. With few ongoing projects, she is hopeful that her work will open the eyes of others to stories often misrepresented or under valued throughout society.
