Maria J Hackett is a Brooklyn based artist with works focused on portraiture, documentary and movement. While heavily focused on her photography and dance throughout NYC, she completed her studies in photography at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Introduced to photography in her junior year at The High School of Fashion Industries, Maria continued on to a series of classes through The International Center of Photography’s Community Programs. Eventually, interning and working as a teaching assistant for a number of photography instructors through ICP followed after, leading to her first position as a photo instructor in the Winter of 2018.  Maria has worked on a number of photo productions including those not limited to Netflix and the New York Times. Some of her work has appeared in the New York Times, Wired Middle East, Buzzfeed, NPR, Globe and Mail Canada and more.

Through her personal work, she documents the lives of various individuals as she maintains the goal of sharing stories through projects based on varying communities. Whether it’s dance, Motherhood or Tao of Jamiva documenting young boxers, her aim is to shed light on those who are not often given the opportunity to share stories as she continues to explore herself and others through photography.
