In March 2023, Kamala Harris, the Vice President of the United States, and Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff arrived in Ghana as part of their weeklong visit to Africa to strengthen U.S. ties with the continent, especially at a time when China and Russia have already established their interests in the continent.
During her visit, Harris met with Ghana's President, Nana Akufo-Addo, at the presidential palace, Jubilee House, and pledged U.S. assistance with security and increased investment in the country. She also held a news conference after meeting with Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo and visited the Vibrate studio at the freedom skate park to meet with young creative artists. The day ended with a State banquet at the Jubilee House in Accra.
The next day, Harris addressed a gathering of young people at Black Star Square in Accra. She and her husband then visited Cape Coast to meet with traditional leaders and tour the castle where millions of Africans were held captive before being transported to the Americas as slaves.
Harris wrapped up her historic visit to Ghana by hosting a roundtable discussion focused on women's economic empowerment in Ghana and across Africa. She met with five female entrepreneurs in various fields at The Mix Design Hub, a woman-owned establishment that serves as a restaurant, gallery, and coworking space. The Vice President, along with Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff, then departed for Tanzania.
