Silk Sarees – The ancient weaving community
Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF) NGO Assignment
Salem, Tamil Nadu, derives its name from "Salya," reflecting its deep-rooted weaving heritage. Renowned for its exquisite silk sarees, the region earned a GI Tag in 2006, marking its unparalleled craftsmanship.
The process begins with warping, where dyed yarn is carefully prepared. Bamboo reeds and healds are crafted to set the loom, a testament to local expertise. The sarees feature deep borders, intricate motifs, and pallus with korai, Tippu, and temple designs, showcasing Salem's artistic brilliance. Beyond silk, Salem fabrics also include unique cotton textiles.
This centuries-old tradition continues to thrive, preserving Salem’s identity as a premier textile hub.
