Stop Weaponizing Antisemitism on Campus
Summary
Photos from a gathering to present UW-Madison chancellor with a book about antisemitism.
Madison, WI
7/25/24
At the home of UW-Madison's chancellor, Jennifer Mnookin, a small but vocal group of Jewish faculty, staff, and students has gathered to express their disappointment with UW-Madison’s treatment of those who speak out against the genocide of the Palestinian people by the Israeli government. This group supporting Palestinian rights have made multiple requests to meet with UW-Madison administrators, all of which have been ignored.
Some sidewalk chalking read, "Stop criminalizing protesters of genocide" and "Anti-Zionist ≠ Anti-Semitism". These two statements are important messages representing freedom of speech and educating people on how being against colonial violence does not equal hatred of Jewish people. Standing against colonial violence is a show of support for Jewish people around the world, especially Jews of color who experience colonial violence at a higher rate.
Speakers shared their experiences about the encampments at UW-Madison, the police brutality they witnessed, and the racism and bigotry by those who were there to bader those calling for an end to genocide. Other speakers talked about their experiences being Jewish and speaking out against Israelí occupation, oppression, and genocide in Gaza of the Palestinian people.
Some Jewish people have historically adopted the Zionist cause to try to ensure safety through the establishment of a Jewish ethnostate, whereas others have always championed an alternative approach—solidarity with other marginalized groups in the many places around the world that Jews live. Thus, the group presented the book, "Safety through Solidarity: A RADICAL GUIDE TO FIGHTING ANTISEMITISM" by Shane Burley and Ben Lorber, to the absent chancellor.
From the invitation to join:
Jewish faculty, students, staff, and allies demand unbiased anti-semitism training and an end to the weaponization of antisemitism that limits our right to speak out against injustice and for Palestinian liberation.
Come help us bring Chancellor Mnookin Shane Burley and Ben Lorber's recent book on antisemitism and rally in front of her house.
