Mass tourism in Rome is nothing short of a blight on it’s beauty, culture and vibe. On one hand, it generates revenue and creates jobs in the hospitality and retail industries, but on the other, it leaves a trail of destruction in its wake. The city’s infrastructure is stretched to breaking point, and its cultural heritage is being erased with overcrowding, traffic congestion, and air pollution becoming increasingly commonplace.
Rome is the 2nd most visited city in the EU, after Paris, and receives an average of 7-10 million tourists a year, which sometimes doubles on holy years.
