Aerial view of the Shkumbini river in central Albania, where a series of hydropower dams operates, owned by the Albanian Orthodox Church. Over 95% of Albania's energy production comes from hydropower. Despite increasing temperatures affecting water levels on rivers and limiting the efficacy of hydropower plants, the Albanian government has continued to approve large and small scale projects on rivers across the country. The projects have wide ranging environmental and societal impacts, displacing rural communities and flooding large swaths of land.
