Public Project
[Performance] Zinon Kalfas x Cabine Cabinet
Summary
Zinon Kalfas x Cabine Cabinet, Berlin 2024.
Face/Sentimental Protest (2023), is a postering project where almost 400 posters were glued on the central Patission Street of Athens, covering the total distance of the busy road from its very start till its end in Omonoia Square.
The picture of the face on the posters was taken after crying over an unfortunate incident regarding loss. Each poster had a word handwritten on it. All words, in a row, make up a poem that was automatically written as a way of extracting sentimental tension -accumulated by this personal thematic of loss/ separation with a loved one.
The words and posters can act as titles; pinning the existence of a personal narrative in public view; freeing the self from its meaning and thus freeing oneself from the personal. Each word and poster could regulate like every breath regulates within our physical body, the body being me, someone else or the cement walls. Each word and poster was manically, roughly or gently glued on the wall as an irony of dealing with ‘separation’ (the wall) by embodying it. Each word and poster was put on the perpendicular walls as reverse-bandaids so as to [un]cover what in-the-end might connect us all in our exposure in the corrupted public field of capitalism: shame.
As a performance, Face/Sentimental Protest happens with the intention of care towards this shame, trying to see it with no capitalist eye of judgment and evaluation. This “allowance” of feeling awkward in the public scape is one of the attributes that the performance piece KATERINA wishes to examine. KATERINA took place on the 7th July 2024 at the Cabinet.
