ON THE EDGE
'On the Edge' is a visual tour of the main migratory routes that connect Africa and the Middle East with Europe through the Mediterranean Sea, capturing the moment in which people who migrate for different reasons cross a border, prepare to do so or die trying.
Crossing the Mediterranean is one of the most dangerous stages of the journey to reach Europe. According to the International Organization for Migration at least 28.805 people have died in the Mediterranean between 2014 and 2024, and that figure only reflects deaths that have been recorded, while many more have gone missing at sea.
Meanwhile, the growing political debate within the European Union is focused on the protection of external borders, rather than protecting the rights of those trying to reach the continent or developing effective strategies to improve the possibilities off integration of those who arrive.
The scenes captured in this project travel through some of the most violent borders in the region, such as the fence that divides Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Melilla: one of the most surreal borders in the world. The central Mediterranean route, which connects the coasts of Libya and southern Europe by sea: the deadliest route in the Mediterranean. The stretches of sea that connect the Turkish coasts with the Greek islands: which marked one of the most intense and tragic chapters of migration in the 21st century. And the so called Balkan route: where thousands of people find themselves blocked on their way to central and northern Europe due to border closures.
